Restored film of San Francisco’s Market Street version of a film shot on April 14, 1906, four days before the Great Earthquake, and the attempt to colorize and sharpen the video-converted film.

Oh wow that’s incredible

I love the guys at the end who are all like “Oh hey look, there’s a camera! Hello camera!”

I’ve seen these restored films going around, but without credit. The original 13-minute film is A Trip Down Market Street, which was shot and produced by the Miles Brothers. It was preserved in the Library of Congress and Prelinger Archives, and in 2018,  Adrianne Finelli scanned and uploaded the footage for the Internet Archive. Now in 2020, Denis Shiryaev restored, upscaled and colorized the film. Shiryaev’s channel has even more restored footage, so check it out if you’re interested.

Remember to source and credit works that are not your own and respect the process and people that gave us this literal glimpse back in time.

THANK YOU.

This is spectacular work.

I don’t mean to be rude; but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, does anyone have any examples?

  • Supernatural
  • Doctor Who (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Sherlock (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Actually Steven Moffat is basically just this sentiment given human form.
  • A version of this happened with The Magicians, tbh. Though instead of expectation: men, reality: women it was expectation: smug nihilists, reality: mentally ill queer folks.
  • Arguably Game of Thrones.

If we broaden it outside of television…I think Star Wars falls into this, at least the sequel trilogy. Maybe the MCU as well. And I can’t help but think of every band that’s ever complained that their fanbase is mostly women. 5 Seconds of Summer comes immediately to mind.

In general, most white male creators seem to have this massively entitled mindset where they want–and think they deserve–the time, attention, and enthusiasm that creative fandom (i.e. the side of fandom more dominated by women) is known for.

They want our eyes for ratings, our word-of-mouth for free publicity, our metas for social media buzz, and our spending power for merch and cons. But they don’t want us. And they don’t really want the responsibility of telling a story to a thoughtful, engaged audience, regardless of that audience’s demographic makeup. They just want to be praised for whatever schlock they cough up.

And like any other spoiled brat, they will break their toys before they share them.

It goes all the way to the top for kids shows. Toy sales will crash a show. Makes sense, but if those toys are gendered for boys instead of the female viewers, they won’t usually switch up the marketing and move them to the girl aisle. They cancel the show outright.

Mind you it is perfectly possible to make the switch in marketing, but execs would rather throw it all out than have something that doesn’t perform well with male viewers. For example the Rey merch was not expected to be popular, for some reason, there had to be public outcry to get merch of one of the main 3 protagonists. A PROTAGONIST. The fact that she wasn’t a huge part of the 1st launch says a lot already.

And what happened when female fans got too invested in the Sequel Trilogy? The entire writers room didn’t necessarily lash out, but they sure forgot how to behave.

Young Justice

Paul Dini: Superhero cartoon execs don’t want largely female audiences

#WhereIsRey (initial)

#WhereIsRey (ongoing)

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was designed to be the opposite of The Last Jedi

You’re all sitting on the hot take of the decade tbh

And yet when they fond out that boys were watching MLP:FIM in droves, they had NO PROBLEM with it.

I’m tiny to the point of insignificance, compared to the creators mentioned in these posts.

I don’t know if it matters, but I am pretty sure my audience is primarily women, and I love that. Men tend to be boring, violent, aggressive, and entitled. I’ve never encountered a single female gatekeeper in my life.

I love the codification of women as the ā€œcreative side of fandomā€ because that reflects my experience.

Women are just more interesting than men, in general, and I can’t imagine being upset about or trying to hurt them.

It’s important to know that hijab is banned in schools in most of the european countries, such as france, belgium, switzerland etc. Millions of girls have to take their hijab off everyday in order to have access to education, and I am one of them. Please spread this as much as possible, it has become so normal here that I feel like a fool for even mentioning it, but I’m pretty sure it goes against the human rights. This senseless law has been on since 2004 and pretends that all the students have to be ā€œequalā€ and it is prohibited to show that you belong to any religion, any religious sign must be set aside. However, most of us have to take our hijab off in schools where you can clearly see a christmas tree or a christian cross. ā€œYeah but it’s not the sameā€, they say. Tell me about double standards. I pray for days when we don’t have to chose between religion and education.

This, but don’t read the notes. It’s all just French people and/or Catholics going ā€œI’m totally not racist or antisemitic, it’s just that I think that Xmas, a holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus, is secular, whereas a Muslim or Jew wearing a hijab or kippah is somehow forcing their religion on me by existing in public.ā€ LOL

“you act like we should all live our lives centered around not causing harm” uh yeah exactly..

yeah im being overly simplistic but if we all loved each other and operated on the assumption that everyone around us is working in a way that uplifts others in every way possible.. things would be good

my dad worked in HR for a big company before he retired. they offered summer internships for the children of employees, which I did for a few years during college. the pay wasn’t high, but you still did basically the same tasks as a full-time employee in your department

and it was WILD

I’d finish a task in a day, only to be told that was my task for the week. my boss was blown away and raved about my efficiency. which was very nice but like…dude. you gave me about 6 hours worth of work, and that’s at a leisurely pace with an hour-long lunch break. why are you so impressed?

eventually I started messing around on my phone for hours to drag the tasks out longer, because I felt bad when my boss had to scramble to find things for me to do. I got like ten fanfic chapters written per month that way

meanwhile, at my last retail job, I got in trouble for talking to vendors at the adjoining stalls during slow periods

apparently native american tribes were in contact with the donner party and offered them food when they saw the colonists were starving and the donner party turned them down and decided to go the whole “cannibalism” route instead.

Until now the Native American perspective has been left out of the telling of the Donner tragedy, not because the wel mel ti did not remember the pioneers, but because they were never asked, or perhaps were not ready to share. Their oral tradition recalls the starving strangers who camped in an area that was unsuitable for that time of year. Taking pity on the pioneers, the northern Washoe attempted to feed them, leaving rabbit meat and wild potatoes near the camps. Another account states that they tried to bring the Donner Party a deer carcass, but were shot at as they approached. Later, some wel mel ti observed the migrants eating human remains. Fearing for their lives, the area’s native inhabitants continued to watch the strangers but avoided further contact. These stories, and the archaeological evidence that appears to support them, certainly complicated my interpretation of the Donner Party event. The migrants at Alder Creek were not surviving in the mountains alone—the northern Washoe were there, and they had tried to help.  (source)

tfw a group of unprepared strangers show up, refuse the food you offer them, start fucking cannibalizing each other, and then call you the savages

The story of the Donner Party is hilarious to me because like, everybody talks about them like these brave pioneers who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of their destiny or whatever the fuck, but they were just complete dumbasses.

Like, have you ever heard of the Murphy Party? Sometimes called the  Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party? They were the first wagon train of the pioneers to make it over the Sierra Nevada, two full years before the Donners tried it, first of the american pioneers to reach the shores of lake Tahoe, first licensed physician in California, etc. etc. Ten families, about fifty people, not a single casualty (they actually arrived with more people than when they left). Because when the Donners picked the most charismatic city boy as their leader, the Murphys picked a mountain man. Where the Donners decided to take a “shortcut” that was completely impassable based on a letter they got from somebody who wanted to drum up business for a trading post he was building but who had never actually driven a wagon, the Murphys scouted properly and stuck to paths their vehicles could actually traverse. Where the Donners decided to shoot at the people who were already living in the area, the Murphys asked the natives for directions. When they got snowed in, they sent a few men on ahead to bring back supplies to the rest of the party after building a sturdy cabin for shelter, instead of trying to hole up in shoddy tents and lean-tos before eating each other.

Not to mention all the idiotic in-fighting in the Donner party; they were constantly brawling or stabbing each other or exiling people or just leaving old men on the side of the path to die or “accidentally” shooting their rivals while cleaning weapons, while literally hundreds of other wagon trains somehow made it through the same trials without any murder.

So naturally, the Donners got a lake and a pass and a state park named after them and became household words, while anybody who wasn’t a complete moron got maybe a local park or a small creek.

Daaaaaaaaaamn.

It gets even better!

Donner was not the original leader of the group- the expedition started out under the leadership of a man named Reed, who did know what he was doing and had lead several groups safely to the Oregon Territory before.

When they reached the point where the new “California Trail” diverged from the Oregon Trail Donner convinced a large portion of the group to join him and travel across the Sierras.

Reed knew this was a very, very bad idea but Donner was apparently just- extremely charismatic and persuasive. Not only did the Reed Party safely make it to Oregon, as originally planned, but Reed immediately headed south as fast as he humanly could, and upon reaching Sacramento recruited a rescue party to bring emergency supplies up from the other side of the pass.

Unfortunately, it was already too late in the year and the weather forced the rescue party to turn back. Despite knowing the odds against the Donner Party surviving Reed refused to assume their deaths and stayed in Sacramento waiting for the mountain trail to clear.

So not only did Reed warn them not to, he was also the one that found the survivors afterwards.

Fuck Donner.
